INTERVIEW MIT FOTOGRAF TOM PORTER

INTERVIEW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER TOM PORTER

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?

I’ve been passionate about photography since I was a child because I always saw my grandpa with a camera and I always loved the photos he took. 10 years later I decided to study photography at college where I learned a lot about the basics of photography. After 2 years and a lot of new knowledge, I graduated with a triple distinction. Now photography has been my profession for over 10 years, and I love it.

I've photographed everything from shoes to cars, from sports to weddings, from landscapes to wildlife - I just really enjoy photographing everything.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE MUCK BOOTS?

My favourite Muck Boots are probably my Edgewater Classic. The thick neoprene keeps my feet nice and warm when I'm out walking in frost and cold weather. I also like that they're flexible, especially when I'm out with my camera and need to get a low-angle shot and I don't have to fight my wellies. I love the colour of the lining and how you can fold the boot down. This gives you almost an ankle-high shoe when it gets hot

WHAT FANCY GEAR DO YOU USE?

I use 2 Canon bodies with various Sigma Art prime lenses, but you don't need expensive equipment to take great photos. Most mobile phones nowadays have a really good camera built in and a photo is all about the light; if you have good light, you get a good photo. Get out there and experiment!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY?

There are so many things I love about photography. The expressions on my wedding clients' faces when they receive their photos. The fun I have with families during photo shoots, capturing memories. Working with brands, bringing their products to life. But the best thing is how creative you can be.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR BEGINNER PHOTOGRAPHERS?

Find something you're passionate about and that's easily accessible, then just take photos of it. Experiment with different light, with light in different places, so that shadows form in different places. Learn what happens when you change camera settings. But most importantly: Have fun with it!
